Pestle & Mortar

Pestle & Mortar is the production company I founded with Faye Planer whilst living in Colombia from 2016 - 2018. Based in Medellin, we specialised in short docs, magazine pieces and radio for the likes of Vice, NBC, National Geographic and the BBC.

National Geographic - Birdwatching with Farc

In this short documentary, Ornithologist Diego Calderon goes on a journey to meet the Farc Battalion who held him hostage a decade earlier in the mountains of Colombia. Made with a National Geographic explorer grant, this film took us to the Tierra Grata community, where former Farc members are seeking to build a new life in post-conflict Colombia.

BBC - The Downfall of “The Screamers”

A BBC radio documentary telling the story of the Atlantis therapy commune in Colombia. Founded in the 70s, the commune moved to rural Colombia in the 90s in search of a simpler and more remote way of life. At first Atlantis coexisted with Farc - the leftist guerrilla group that controlled the area - but as the Colombian civil war intensified, the commune came to a tragic and violent end.

Vice / Quartz - Drones vs Deforestation

In 2016 we reported from the Darien rainforest in Panama, where an indigenous community had started making use of drone flights and GPS tracking technology to document incursions into their land by neighbouring cattle ranchers. The end product was a magazine feature for Vice Magazine and a video for Quartz.
