Filmed over ten years, One in a Million follows Israa’s epic journey from Syria to Germany and back again. Directors Itab Azzam and Jack MacInnes first met Israa in 2015, aged 11, as her family fled Aleppo. As she grows up in Germany, she and her family navigate war, exile and heartbreak in a foreign land, revealing the complexities of the refugee experience.

Winner of the Audience Award and the Directing Award for World Cinema Documentary at Sundance 2026.

I recut the theatrical version of the film for broadcast on the BBC and PBS.
